Oh I get it now, Tesla is a charity. So does that mean I can write off the model 3 payments?

I have a hammer that belonged to my grandfather. It’s on its second handle, and I replaced the head last summer, but it still works fine.

Tesla, Uber and Pets.com. The shining examples of trickle down economics succeeding.

Musk’s stated goal with Tesla was to force major manufacturer’s to produce electric cars earlier than they would have without Tesla. I think they’ve succeeded. Musk has always been upfront with profit not being Tesla’s primary focus. They also open sourced all their patents.

Nobody’s forcing you to invest. Short it if you want. TSLA has a huge short position. And the shorts keep getting boned.

Business is about turning profit. If you aren’t turning profit it is known as a hobby.

My feelings as well.

It’s kind of short sighted to view good business = good profit. Especially when innovation is involved.

Of course that begs the question. Is it really your grandpa’s hammer anymore?

Not gonna lie, when I see a Tesla running around the DC area with a sticker on the back that lets them drive in HOV lanes, I get a little jealous.

Or a charity. He’s Robin Hood- stealing from the rich (investors) and giving to the slightly less rich.

Wasn’t that part of their mission statement or something? Something about explicitly NOT chasing profits, and focusing instead on inspiring the world to invest in sustainable transportation?

Building cars is hard and developing cars from scratch is expensive. Tesla not making a profit makes sense, for now. Established car manufactures use their income from the previous model to fund the next one. Tesla could not do that if they wanted to become a major player. So they had to develop 4 chassis from scratch, using investor money. If they waited for the first chassis to pay for itself, then make enough profit to fund the next car, they would already be out of business because they would be irrelevant.

Stock price doesn’t have to be about earning. Sometimes you you buy stocks for income (dividends) with small growth, or sometimes you buy stock just because of the growth potential. That is what Tesla is, right now. A growth stock. Same thing with Amazon. They never turn a profit but invest back into the company. In turn, they have grown like crazy.

While I am not a Tesla investor myself, I don’t see lack of profit being an issue. In one year, after they have a solid quarter of full model 3 production, I would expect them to be in the black. But, they are using income for R&D/Capital projects. That is the reason for cash burn. They are not burning through cash because executives want gold toilets on their G650's

Time will only tell. While I hate the whole Silicon Valley attitude/culture and think Musk should STFU, I am rooting for them. I think we should all want them to succeed. How often does a new American designed / built car company come around? Being an American manufacturer, albeit on a smaller scale, I can tell you how hard it is in this country. We need more manufacturing in this country and high tech cars is the perfect product.

Fair enough. I don’t either. I thought Tesla was a good idea so I lent them some money.
